Sermon Summary:

All of us have experienced tragedy. We have experienced tragedy in the lives of those we love. We have experienced tragedy in the life of this nation. We have seen people find hope in many ways—the economy, the strength of our nation, even in the faithful care of loved ones, but the only way we can face the tragedies of life is to find our ultimate hope in God alone. We make contact with reality with our minds and our hearts. We may know how to make an apple pie. We can follow a recipe. We can even remember what an apple pie tastes like but until we put that apple pie in our mouth, we have not experienced the joy of having apple pie (a la mode). God made us so we can experience the assurance of the Gospel with both our minds and our hearts. Yet, only when the Gospel melts into our hearts can we experience the power of God’s hope. Isaiah helped his people and helps us find our way back to hoping in God when God feels unreal in our very real crisis (Raymond Ortlund Jr.).
