Summary:

Since God is building the church into a spiritual house, Peter gives the church some house rules. Peter explains the need for Christians to submit to the authority that God has placed in their lives. He begins with identifying the need for Christians to submit to the state. He will later explain the need to submit to authority in our homes and in our church. Peter explains that the Christian should submit to civil authority because it is God’s will and because it will silence those who want to slander the church. When we honor our leaders, we glorify God and benefit the church. We have freedom in Christ, but not the freedom to live a life of rebellion. Our best example for submitting to the state is Christ himself who is the King of Kings, yet in his life submitted to civil authorities.
