Throughout history nations have made alliances with other nations which led to the destruction of one or both nations. An historical example during World War 2 is Stalin’s alliance with Hitler not to interfere with Hitler’s conquest of Western Europe. Stalin thought he made a wise alliance until Hitler invaded Russia. This false promise led to the loss of many Russian and German lives and much destruction for both nations. We must be careful not to make false promises to others out of a desire to fulfill our own self-interests. Others cannot supply what we need, only God can. We can abandon our self-interests when we truly trust in God’s sovereignty to supply all of our needs according to His riches in Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:19). Only then can we be truly trustworthy in our dealings with others. We then can simply be about giving to others rather than getting from others. God is about to teach His people this lesson.
