Every time I read about fasting, think about fasting, and have fasted, I ask myself the same question. Do I really have to do this? Am I doing this to just look and/or feel spiritual? In the OT fasting was always connected to mourning over and repenting of sin. John the Baptist, the last prophet of the OT, and his disciples fasted. Jesus’ disciples did not fast because fasting implied sorrow. Why would they be sorrowful over the Messiah coming to save them? Ceremonial fasting means nothing. The only fasting that means anything is the kind that brings a changed life. Fasting from food, drink, and things is to be done before the Lord and not other people. It is between our soul and our Father. Often fasting helps us in discerning God’s will and direction for our lives.
