Sermon Title: “Jesus: A Prophet Mighty in Deed and Word” (Jim Womer)

Sermon Text: Luke 24:13-35

Summary:

Throughout the Old Testament, we can see clearly three offices that God ordained for Israel: Prophet, Priest, and King. Jesus Christ fulfilled all three of these offices and still holds them today. In this passage, Jesus joins two disciples on the road to Emmaus. The two disciples were in a state of mourning and shock over what had happened to Jesus. They explain to their “guest” that Jesus was a prophet mighty in deed and word. In fact, Jesus is still the living prophet who speaks to them through the Word of God to explain who he is. Jesus still exercises the office of prophet today by revealing to us the will of God for our salvation through his Word and Spirit.
