NCF's Easter Sunday "The Sunday Sermon" - April 9, 2023
There are benefits in celebrating Christian holidays like Easter and Christmas, and the practice of observing the 40 days of Lent. The Bible, however, nowhere asks us to celebrate Christmas, Easter, or Lent. It does call us to celebrate the Lord’s Supper and Baptism since these were instituted by Christ just as circumcision and Passover were instituted by Him in the OT. Christian holidays have value but can overshadow what and how we are to celebrate what Christ has done for us. Every Sunday we celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus Christ. In fact, as Christians, we should celebrate Christ’s death, resurrection, ascension and soon return every day. The only danger I see in giving special attention to certain days on the church calendar is it can aid to the growth of hypocrisy in the Church. Jesus warns about doing good for others to see or uttering religious words to hear. He calls us to do righteous deeds in secret for His glory. We do not do them to get attention and praise from others. How many people just come to church on Christmas and Easter? We call them the C&E Christians. They believe they can still be considered in the Christian camp since they still go to church on those days. Does not the Bible call us to devote ourselves to public worship more than this? May God deliver us from our hypocrisy and cause us to do righteous deeds, utter righteous words to praise Him alone.
