Sermon Title: “The Conquest”  (Pastor Bob)

Sermon Text: Joshua 10:16 - 12:24  

Summary:

How did Joshua and the Israeli army take the land of Canaan? They received clear direction and obtained their objective from God and His power as a Warrior. One of His names teaches us this truth – “Yahweh Nissi” or “Jehovah Nissi.” It means, “The Lord is My Banner.” To understand this name of God we must understand how armies in the ancient world fought battles. Leaders of armies would tie a piece of fabric to a pole to rally their troops to get them ready for battle and to achieve an objective. That “flagpole” was a banner for the army. “Yahweh Nissi” does not just mean, “The Lord is My Banner,” but “God is our rallying point.” God gives us our direction and objective, and any battle against His enemies and ours must be in His power and for the sake of His goals, and not our own.

Meditation: Isaiah 9:5-6

For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire. For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
